21st EGF Symposium 2021
EGF2021

“Sensing – New insights into grassland science and practice”
The 21st Symposium of the European Grassland Federation was hosted by Germany and addressed an innovative and dynamic research area – namely the application of remote sensing for improving the assessment of biomass, forage quality and ecosystem services of grasslands.
The symposium offered the stage for demonstration of sensing tools and methods. Researchers, practitioners and industries presented and discussed recent advances and novel approaches of remote sensing in grassland research, including applications in production, biodiversity and soil science. The symposium was organised around three scientific themes:
- Biomass and quality characteristics
- Biodiversity and other ecosystem services
- Management and decision support
Virtual conference – superbly organised
The 21st EGF Symposium 2021 took place virtually. The online conference arranged by the University of Kassel, Germany, attracted and impressed 180 registered attendees from 26 countries. Organising such a congress in such a perfect way is a major task that requires solid scientific and technical know-how and appropriate facilities. The organisers received much praise for the way in which the diverse programme elements were organised and handled during the varied virtual conference.
Current state of research and practice – valuable overview
Despite the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic the 21st EGF Symposium created visibility of a large community with creative, high profiled researchers and provided a valuable overview of the current state of development in research and practice in the use of remote sensing in grassland agriculture and stimulated fruitful discussions and networking.
Congratulations and thanks
The 21st EGF Symposium 2021 was a great success, scientifically, technically and socially. The European Grassland Federation EGF congratulates and thanks Prof. Dr Michael Wachendorf, University of Kassel (Organising Committee), and Prof. Dr Johannes Isselstein, University of Göttingen, and Dr Manuel Schneider, Agroscope (both Scientific Committee), and all their colleagues who were involved in the organisation of the 21st EGF Symposium 2021. In addition, a special thank is to be addressed to the important generous sponsors and supporters.
Outcome of the event
After the interesting sessions with many top-class talks and poster presentations and inspiring discussions, the participants of EGF2021 were left with excellent proceedings and the best memories of the event and the host country Germany with its competent organisation team.
